Some Windows 11 devices running version 23H2 have encountered an unexpected behavior after applying the latest security update, released earlier this month. Instead of shutting down as intended, these systems restart automatically, leaving users without a proper power-off state.

The issue stems from the January Patch Tuesday update, identified as KB5073455. Microsoft has confirmed awareness of the problem and noted that it affects devices utilizing System Guard Secure Launch—a feature designed to enhance boot-time security by validating system integrity before loading Windows.

While the shutdown behavior is the primary concern, hibernation mode also fails to function correctly on affected systems. Despite this, Microsoft has not yet provided an official fix, though work is underway to resolve the issue in a future update.

A temporary solution exists for users who need immediate control over their system’s power state. By executing the command shutdown /s /t 0 in Command Prompt or creating a desktop shortcut with this instruction, users can force a full shutdown until the problem is officially patched.

The affected Windows 11 23H2 version has been unsupported since November 2025, except for Enterprise and IoT editions. However, the persistence of this issue suggests that many systems remain in use despite the lack of official updates.

For now, users experiencing this behavior should monitor Microsoft’s update channels for further announcements regarding a permanent resolution. In the meantime, the manual shutdown command serves as a practical workaround to avoid unintended restarts.
