Players of Wildgate are about to experience a familiar transition for many multiplayer games: a shift from active development to maintenance. Less than a year after its launch on Steam in July 2025, the sci-fi PvPvE shooter will receive its final major content update with patch 1.5.4 in July. After this update, the game will enter maintenance mode, meaning no new large-scale content additions are planned.
Despite entering maintenance, Wildgate will continue to receive updates, including bug fixes, balance adjustments, and small events or rewards that repurpose existing content. The development team at Moonshot Games has cited a lack of sufficient audience engagement as the reason for this shift. However, the game will remain playable and purchasable on all platforms where it is available.
Patch 1.5.4 brings several notable changes to Wildgate. A revamped game mode selection screen aims to provide more informative options for players. Additionally, new player-controlled custom game settings are introduced, alongside a one-year anniversary celebration. These updates reflect the team's efforts to enhance the player experience before transitioning to maintenance.
The development team will shift focus to new projects, though player support and community management efforts will be reduced but not entirely discontinued. The official Wildgate Discord server will also be handed over to the community, marking a significant change in how the game is managed moving forward.
At its peak, Wildgate attracted around 7,799 concurrent players on Steam shortly after launch. However, player counts have since dropped significantly, with daily peaks ranging between 25 and 150 by early 2026. The long-term viability of the game remains uncertain, as its multiplayer features depend on online services that require ongoing investment.
While Wildgate's active development days are numbered, the game will continue to offer a playable experience for existing players. Whether it will remain a staple in the gaming ecosystem or fade into obscurity depends on factors beyond the control of its developers.
