Marathon’s first major patch is now live, bringing a series of calculated adjustments designed to refine gameplay without disrupting core mechanics. The update addresses player feedback on audio cues, thermal scope visibility, and class-specific performance, while also introducing changes to in-game microtransactions.
The most noticeable shift comes in how sound travels within the game. Gunfire and explosions now carry farther than before, increasing the likelihood that noise will draw attention from enemies or automated threats. This adjustment aims to restore a sense of tension by making stealth more viable at longer ranges.
Thermal scopes have also been recalibrated, reducing their effectiveness as a long-range detection tool. The distance at which enemies clearly appear through thermal scopes has been shortened for all weapon categories: pistols now show targets at 40 meters instead of 55, rifles and light machine guns at 60 meters (down from 65), precision rifles at 80 meters (from 100), and sniper rifles at 100 meters (down dramatically from 180). This tweak addresses concerns about overpowered long-range visibility while maintaining tactical utility.
For players who prefer solo runs, the Rook class received a mix of buffs and a single nerf. Extracting as a Rook now grants more CyberAcme reputation experience, aligning it with rewards previously reserved for core Runner shells. However, the WSTR Shotgun—Rook’s signature weapon—now starts in a compromised state, requiring Matter Fixative to ensure successful extraction without losing the weapon.
Additional quality-of-life improvements include an increase in the number of med cabinets and munitions crates available on Perimeter, as well as higher starting ammo counts for free-sponsored kits from MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne. These changes aim to reduce frustration during early-game resource scarcity while maintaining balance.
Looking ahead, Bungie has confirmed new rewards will be added to the Rewards Pass in mid-April, responding directly to player requests for more meaningful battle pass content. The updates include Arachne Shell Styles—a long-awaited addition—and new skins for Thief, Assassin, Destroyer, and Recon shells, along with a WSTR Shotgun skin and profile emblem for the free track.
While the patch introduces no major structural overhauls, its focus on incremental refinements suggests Bungie is prioritizing player experience over rapid evolution. The adjustments to audio and thermal scopes, in particular, demonstrate an effort to balance visibility with strategic depth—a shift that could influence similar titles in competitive multiplayer genres.
