As to why this happened, according to Meadows, the problem arose from how the game's Discord SDK works. When you enable Discord integration with ARC Raiders, Embark uses the full Discord Bearer authentication to access your data. And, as Meadows puts it, "Rather than filtering sensitive events, the SDK logs everything it receives to disk." That's how private messages ended up in plain text in game log files.
