Friday, May 22nd 2026 Steam Controller Gets HID Remapper Support for 3rd-Party Compatibility by Cpt.Jank Today, 19:31 Discuss (0 ) HID Remapper is an open-source, hardware-agnostic project that makes input devices remappable with a hardware USB adaptor that sits between the input device and the host device and converts inputs from the controller into a signal that is compatible with the host. According to a new May 20 update to HID Remapper, it now fully supports the Valve Steam Controller, effectively eliminating the biggest complaint that came up in reviews of the Steam Controller—that it only works in Steam games with Steam running in the background. According to the project's developer, Jack Fedoryński, "All inputs are usable, including the trackpads, touch sensors and accelerometer/gyro," and, aside from working outside of Steam Input on Windows and Linux, the controller is now also compatible with the Nintendo Switch, Android devices, and the Xbox Series consoles. While the project is open-source, and there are files available to build your own converter, there are also pre-built options on the market for as little as $17.50—although you may have to do some DIY work to make an enclosure and flash the firmware to make it a complete package.
