The God of War TV series set to debut on Prime Video has revealed its lead actor for the iconic role of Kratos. Ryan Hurst, known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, and as Thor in God of War: Ragnarok, will take on the part, marking a significant shift after Christopher Judge's long-standing portrayal.

Judge, who won Best Performance at The Game Awards in 2022 for his work, had become synonymous with Kratos. His 2023 acceptance speech, which evolved from awkward to memorable, cemented his place in gaming history. Hurst, while less recognized in the gaming world, brings a deep, commanding presence that aligns with the character's intensity.

Speculation about Judge reprising the role emerged earlier this year but was quickly dismissed by the actor himself via social media. Whether he returns as Thor remains an open question for fans, though his absence from Kratos is undeniable.

The series itself has undergone major changes since its initial announcement in December 2022. A complete overhaul followed after key personnel, including the showrunner and executive producers, departed. Sony and Amazon reportedly pushed for a new creative direction, leading to a fresh writing team being brought on board. Ronald Moore, renowned for his work on Battlestar Galactica, now leads the project. Notably, Moore has stated he is not a gamer, adding an intriguing dynamic to the series' development.

The show's production timeline remains fluid, with no confirmed release date. The transition from Judge to Hurst suggests a deliberate effort to redefine Kratos for a new generation of viewers, though the character's essence will undoubtedly remain intact.
