PC peripherals rarely see designs from two decades ago resurface, but Elecom’s M.A.P.P. mouse is defying that trend. First introduced in 2002 as a collaboration between Ghost in the Shell manga artist Masamune Shirow and mecha designer Hajime Katoki, the mouse was ahead of its time—prioritizing ergonomics and unconventional form factors while pushing mechanical innovation.

Now, 24 years later, Elecom is reviving this icon with a limited reissue. The original design has been updated to meet modern expectations: Bluetooth connectivity, multi-device pairing, silent switches for all five buttons, and a lithium-ion battery that lasts up to 45 days on a single charge. It weighs in at 78 grams, measures 67 x 106 x 38 millimeters, and supports adjustable DPI settings (400, 800, 1600, 2400, and 3200). The battery is rechargeable via USB-C with an estimated lifespan of around 100,000 charge cycles.

Shirow personally oversaw updates to the design, particularly around the newly added side buttons, while preserving the core aesthetic that made the original stand out. This isn’t just a nostalgic throwback—it’s a functional peripheral with modern software support through Elecom’s Mouse Assistant, available on both Windows and macOS.

Elecom Revives a Legend: The M.A.P.P. Mouse Returns After Two Decades

The timing of this reissue aligns with the upcoming Ghost in the Shell anime series, set to premiere in July 2026. The mouse comes in three color variants (black, white, and blue), each limited to 3,300 units. Pre-orders open April 6 through Elecom’s Direct Shop, with general availability starting May 1 at a price of 12,800 yen (approximately $85).

For PC builders and collectors, this reissue offers a rare chance to own a piece of peripheral history—one that blends retro design with modern functionality. However, the limited supply (3,300 units per variant) means demand could outstrip availability quickly.

The M.A.P.P. mouse’s return is more than just a revival; it’s a statement on how certain designs transcend their era. Whether it becomes a staple for enthusiasts or remains a niche curiosity depends on its reception and supply chain performance.
