Windows 11 is getting a small but practical upgrade that could save users time and frustration: a direct network speed test built into the taskbar.

Starting with preview builds 26100.7918 and 26200.7918—part of the 24H2 and 25H2 releases—the feature lets users check their connection speed without opening a separate app. Simply right-click the network icon in the system tray or tap the Wi-Fi/cellular quick settings to launch the test. Results appear in the default browser, covering Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular connections.

This isn’t just a convenience for power users. Network diagnostics have long relied on third-party tools or web-based services, often requiring manual setup or browser extensions. Now, Microsoft has streamlined the process into a native experience, making it easier to troubleshoot slow connections or verify ISP performance.

The change was spotted earlier this month by a Windows Insider tester, though Microsoft officially confirmed it in a recent blog post. The rollout follows a gradual and normal deployment schedule, meaning not all users will see it immediately.

Windows 11 Now Lets You Test Network Speed Directly from the Taskbar—No App Needed
  • No more detours: Users no longer need to open a browser or install software to check speeds.
  • Universal coverage: Tests Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular—useful for laptops, desktops, and mobile hotspots.
  • Built for troubleshooting: Quick diagnostics for lagging connections, ISP issues, or hardware problems.

While the feature is currently in preview, Microsoft’s history suggests it may eventually become standard in stable releases. For now, those on the Release Preview Channel can test it out—though performance may vary depending on the build.

The addition underscores Microsoft’s push to integrate more utility tools directly into Windows, reducing reliance on external applications for common tasks.
