The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are stepping out of the sewers and into the Magic: The Gathering* multiverse. Wizards of the Coast has announced a new crossover set that blends the franchise’s iconic arcade roots with the game’s strategic depth, including a pre-built Commander deck, a cooperative play box, and mechanics that mirror the Turtles’ signature stealth and teamwork.
At the heart of the set is a five-color Commander deck themed around the Turtles’ arcade adventures. Cards like Game Over, Level Up, High Score, and Arcade Cabinet evoke the pixelated nostalgia of classic titles, with some featuring pixel art by illustrator Kirokaze. This deck is designed for players who enjoy high-energy, multicolor strategies—ideal for Commander, a format where players control a single powerful deck.
New Mechanics: Sneak and Disappear
Two standout mechanics define the set’s gameplay: Sneak and Disappear. Sneak allows cards to be played when an opponent selects blockers, letting players substitute a new attacker for one they’ve bounced back into their hand. Think of it as a ninja ambush—suddenly appearing where least expected. Disappear, its counterpart, triggers effects at the end of a turn if a card left the battlefield earlier, even if it vanished before the Disappear card was played. For example, Krang & Shredder forces opponents to exile cards, but if you Disappear one, you can play it from exile—a tactical twist that rewards timing and deception.
A Co-Op Box for Team Play
The set also introduces the Turtle Team-Up box, a co-op experience for up to four players. Each player selects a deck based on a specific Turtle—Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, or Michelangelo—and works together to defeat shared bosses. The box includes simplified difficulty levels, making it accessible for new players while offering depth for veterans. It’s a direct nod to the franchise’s Saturday morning cartoon roots, where teamwork was the key to victory.
Artwork and Legacy
For fans who remember the Turtles’ origins in comics, the set includes artwork by Kevin Eastman, one of the franchise’s co-creators. His traditional style appears on select cards, bridging the gap between the franchise’s comic book roots and its modern iterations. The set also revives the Alliance mechanic from Avatar: The Last Airbender, letting cards with the keyword trigger effects when another Alliance card is played—a fitting homage to the Turtles’ legendary teamwork.
Availability
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Magic set will launch in Magic: The Gathering Arena on March 3, with physical releases following on March 6. Prerelease events begin on February 27, offering players a chance to dive into the set early. Whether you’re a Commander veteran or a newcomer to Magic*, this set promises a fresh take on the game—one that’s as dynamic as the Turtles themselves.
