Google has announced a significant expansion of its AI capabilities, enabling users in the US to make purchases directly through conversations with Gemini or within Google Search’s AI Mode. This new feature, dubbed 'Checkout,' allows for transactions using Google Pay or PayPal without the need to navigate away from the chat interface.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by Google to streamline online shopping. Alongside the Checkout feature, Google has introduced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to facilitate seamless interactions between AI agents, payment systems, and retailers. The UCP is compatible with existing protocols such as Agent2Agent (A2A), Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), and Model Context Protocol (MCP).

The development of the UCP was a collaborative effort involving major retailers including Shopify, Etsy, Walmart, and Target. Additionally, over 20 other companies, including Mastercard and Visa, have supported this initiative. This collaboration aims to create a more cohesive and efficient ecosystem for AI-driven commerce.

What sets this initiative apart is its focus on user experience. By integrating purchasing directly into AI interactions, Google and its partners are aiming to reduce friction in the shopping process. Users can now describe what they want, receive recommendations or product details from the AI, and complete their purchase—all within the same conversation.

This new feature is currently available to users in the US, marking a significant step forward in the integration of AI into everyday shopping experiences. The collaboration between Google and major retailers underscores the potential for AI to transform how consumers interact with online stores, promising a more seamless and intuitive shopping experience.
